Description

Navegando el mar blanco-superficie spans four panels, presenting a fragmented yet unified vision of abstract silhouettes against vast expanses of white. Created with contact paper on vellum, the work balances stark forms with delicate negative space, evoking the sensation of navigating across shifting waters. Its bold black surfaces and subtle variations of texture suggest both presence and erasure, inviting the viewer to reflect on the boundaries between surface, depth, and the spaces in between.

Artist Statement

Gadiel Rivera Herrera was born in 1963 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He started his studies in Ceramics and Sculpture at the Universidad Interamericana Puerto Rico, San Germán Campus (1988) and obtained a B.A. in Sculpture from Escuela de Artes Plásticas in San Juan (1991). He was the first recipient of an art residency at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR) sponsored by the Darryl Chappell Foundation (2022).

Navigating between ceramic, sculpture, drawing, and collage, his practice is nurtured by a range of mediums, each one contributing different attributes to my work. While researching particular topics, he simultaneously experiments with materials which inform his conceptual work.
